The Industry Data for Society Partnership Welcomes Telefónica Tech as a New Partner

Today, the Industry Data for Society Partnership (IDSP) welcomes Telefónica Tech as a new partner. Telefonica Tech is the strategic digital business unit of the Spanish telecommunications group Telefónica.
Established in 2022, the IDSP is a cross-industry partnership with a mission to help advance more open and accessible private-sector data for societal good. Open data plays a critical role in enabling faster research and collaboration across industries and with the public sector. Members of the IDSP agree to provide greater access to their data, where appropriate, to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges in areas such as sustainability and inclusive economic growth.
As a new partner, Telefónica Tech brings unique insights and perspectives from the telecommunications and technology industry. Telefónica Tech is a leading digital transformation company that helps businesses become more efficient, secure, and sustainable through integrated technology services and solutions in cyber security, cloud, IoT, big data, artificial intelligence and blockchain.
“Having realized early on the unique value of anonymized telco data (mobility, footfall, antenna activity), Telefonica is working since more than 10 years ago on Data for Good initiatives, first through research, then as pilots and now focused on creating real impact through sustainable ecosystems with key stakeholders through Telefónica Tech. We have proven with various stakeholders that our data can help fight climate change and pandemics, as well as help alleviate the consequences of natural disasters and forced migration. We know it works, and we all have a responsibility to act”, said Carlos Martínez, director of AI and Data solutions and services at Telefónica Tech.
In 2020, as the global pandemic emerged and governments worked to manage the spread of the disease, Telefónica shared anonymized and aggregated mobility indicators, extracted with Telefónica tech’s Smart Steps tool, with governments in Europe and Latin America to help inform government policies around social distancing and lockdown measures. Telco-government collaborations, such as this, have been critical to understanding how telco mobile data analytics can help prepare the world for future pandemics. Telefonica additionally made anonymized mobile data more accessible, thanks to Telefónica Tech’s air quality technology solution, to better predict air pollution levels in São Paulo, Brazil, among other initiatives.
